What We’re Reading

Posted on September 14, 2020May 29, 2021 by The Basic Moms

The Ur Basic Mom Contributors Share Their Favorite Books

Normal life is back in full swing for most of us, or as close to normal as it’s going to get for a while. One thing that I think several of our contributors have enjoyed during quarantine is the extra opportunity to read. That’s not to say that we have all had unlimited amounts of time to dive into the newest James Patterson novel. But with the temporary suspension of summer sports and plenty of vacations canceled, it did allow for more reading time.

What we’re currently reading

His & Hers by Alice Feeney (this is her newest book). I read “Sometimes I Lie” by Alice Feeney, too. I’m really into her style of writing and her psychological thrillers.

– Chelsea

FICTION: The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert

NONFICTION: This is Marketing by Seth Godin, How to Become a High School Superstar by Cal Newport, Circle of Quiet by Madeline L’ Engle, Adventuring Together by Greta Eskridge, Love to Lose by Camille Martin

READING WITH THE KIDS: The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict by Trenton Lee Stuart

-Celeste

Audible is my new addiction! The prequel to the Hunger Games….The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins. It completely tells the story of President Snow.

I also read ALLLLLLLL of the Alphabet Mysteries by Sue Grafton only to learn that she did not finish “Z” because she passed away. I’m very bitter about this because I have no closure to the story of this heroine. I mean, I invested 25 books and didn’t get a final 26th because Ms. Grafton was called home. So frustrating as a fan…. completely understandable as a human being.

I’m reading like 5 different books:

Boundaries by Henry Cloud and John Townsend

The Insulin Resistance Diet

Wife by Penelope Sky (more on the erotic fiction side)

Babysitters Club with my girls

19th Christmas by James Patterson

-Caroline

After searching a couple of books, I’ve finally settled on Heidi’s Guide to Four Letter Words by Tara Sivec and Andi Arndt. And if you are doing Audible, definitely don’t listen to it around the children.

–Claire

I just finished up Midnight Sun by Stephanie Meyer. I’m not ashamed to admit I spent my 20’s as a “Twi-Hard”. So when the author of the Saga finally finished her revisiting of Forks through the eyes and mind of Edward, I had to read it. The book also gives the reader a glimpse into the history of each of the Cullens. I loved it, but be forewarned it is a long read (650+ pages).

-Heather

I’ve recently finished Pretty Things by Janelle Brown and a YA novel set at the end of WWII called They Went Left by Monica Hesse. I’m also listening to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone with my kiddos.

-Jessica

I’ve been reading The 5 Hour School Week by Aaron and Kaleena Amuchastegui and The Call of the Wild and Free by Ainsley Arment. I’m starting Charlotte’s Web with the boys.

– Julie

I started reading Untamed by Glennon Doyle. I’m almost half way through but it’s been such a struggle to read. While she has some great one liners, I feel like I’m being preached to. I’m disappointed because so many people recommended and loved this book.

– Stephanie

So what’s next on our list?

As you can probably tell, the ladies over at Ur  Basic Mom are what one might call “book nerds” and we are proud of it. So what is next on tap for our bookshelves? Here are just a few books that we are planning to read next.

Next on my list is A Walk Along the Beach by Debbie Macomber,  Opposite of Always by Justin A. Reynolds, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han, Life and Death by Stephanie Meyer, and An American Marriage by Tayari Jones.

This holiday season I plan to dive into Jingle All The Way, Alaskan Holiday and The Snow Bride by Debbie Macomber and also Christmas in Ghost Gum Springs by Nicole Flockton. I am a complete Christmas Junkie!!

I’m anxiously waiting for The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes to come into our library.

–Jessica

I’m super pumped to start reading Togetherness Redefined by our contributor, Celeste Orr!!!!

– Julie

What are the books we can’t help but go back to?

And then there those books that just find their way into your soul and live there forever. You know, the ones that you just keep falling into again and again. These are our books that we love to read and reread:

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, You Learn by Living by Eleanor Roosevelt, and Togetherness Redefined by Celeste Orr are my constant books that I go back and reread.

I love going back to A Walk to Remember, A Bend in the Road, The Notebook, and The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks. I also go back through The Twilight Saga from beginning to end whenever I get time.

– Heather

If only there were more hours in a day to spend with a good book. We ladies at Ur Basic Mom wish each of you happy reading. Do you enjoy fiction or nonfiction? Maybe you are more into self-help or a well put together cookbook. Have you come across a new novel that you think our contributors would love to read too?
